The perfect vehicle to take on the world for those willing to compromise.

In the summer of 2018, Karissa and I sat huddled together in the front seats of our Mitsubishi Montero deep in the woods of Montana. It was raining, it was close to freezing, and to top it all off, it was my birthday. We ate an uncomfortably chilly dinner, then I blew out my candles outside under the awning before we quickly retreated to the front seats of our truck. As we enjoyed the chocolate cake, we both looked at each other and said simultaneously: “It’s time.” From that moment, the search for a more appropriate world traveling rig, our 1994 Troopy, began.

There’s no such thing as a perfect travel vehicle, though claiming that has quickly become a social media strategy to get those precious, precious clicks. Overlanding is a very personal type of lifestyle. No one truck or single setup can be considered perfect for a wide swath of people with very different outdoor lifestyles, cultures, interests, or ways of living. Not everyone wants to rock crawl for endless miles just to have to poop in a hole. Some prefer the calmer routes that let them experience the world around them. Everyone brings something different to the table, and everyone has different needs from their vehicles. Just because the market is currently pushing everyone to own full-sized trucks with slide ins or flatbed campers, does not mean that’s the way forward.

What’s the next step?

We’d been traveling around the country in our Montero for a good five years. We loved the freedom this type of lifestyle gave us while we traveled, we loved being self-sufficient, we loved cooking our own meals, and we loved sleeping in our own covers. Most of all, we loved being around absolutely nobody.

But we were done with not having a place to be when the weather turned bad. We’re both self-employed photographers. Not having a place to retreat to get work done is tough when you’re on the road. Cafes and libraries became our temporary computer desks. But what if we could stay at camp and work from inside our rig? Interior space became our dream. Only one vehicle checked all our boxes: the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier, aka Troopy, which would become our world traveling unicorn.

Finding the Troopy

After we came home from that trip, the search started. We put feelers out to friends, and friends of friends that were vehicle importers. We originally wanted a left-hand drive, but quickly found that the combination of LHD and a six-cylinder diesel was near impossible to find. While traveling for a year and a half, we had people all over the world helping to source us a Troopy. There were a few potentials, but none of them were “the one.” Frustrated with not much to show after so long, Karissa turned to the internet. After a month of constant searching, she found it — on a Facebook group, of all places.

We wired money overseas, then our importer took over. A few months later, it landed at the Port of Long Beach. It was a 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier RV from Darwin, New South Wales, Australia. It was right-hand drive, but we were more than okay with it because it came with the much lauded 4.2L straight-six 1HZ diesel. Dual fuel tanks from the factory, gave us a total range of around 650 miles. It was clean, had very little rust and had 334,000 km on the odometer. High, but not super high. The previous owner did a bit of touring around Australia, so it came with some modifications, many which we’re still using: a TJM bull bar with side bars, Tough Dog adjustable shocks and Tough Dog heavy leaf springs.

Troopy Specs: Under the Hood and Beyond

Curious what makes our Troopy tick? Here’s the nitty-gritty for the fellow vehicle nerds, because we know you’re out there. This 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier is built for the long haul—literally and figuratively.

  • Engine: It’s powered by the trusty 4.2-liter 1HZ diesel engine (naturally aspirated, of course). Not a speed demon, but it’ll crawl over just about anything and purr like a content camel all day.
  • Fuel Capacity: With two 80-liter tanks on board, you’re looking at a combined range that’ll easily outlast your road trip snack stash.
  • Wheels & Tires: Rolling on steel rims with a -22 offset, wrapped in chunky 285/75/16 mud-terrains. Because sometimes a “road” is just a suggestion.
  • Drivetrain: Classic part-time four-wheel drive, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. High and low range at your fingertips—no app download required.
  • Suspension: Big bore gas shocks and a 2-inch lift kit, plus four heavy leaf springs rated for a constant 600-kilogram load. Basically, ready for corrugations, potholed backroads, and enough camera gear to open a pop-up studio.

We couldn’t have asked for a better expedition partner for those remote Baja beaches, mountain passes, or, let’s be honest, grocery runs.

First Impressions and Early Challenges

Of course, no “dream rig” rolls off the boat without a few quirks that need sorting. Ours was no exception. The first thing we noticed was the elevated roof—not exactly our style, but something we could live with. The paintwork was a bit off from what we’d pictured, and it didn’t take long to discover the electrical system was more moody than reliable.

On the practical side, the Troopy only came fitted with sleeping and seating for two—comfy for us, but not exactly guest-friendly. And let’s not forget the plumbing situation. The water tank and plumbing setup left a lot to be desired, with less-than-ideal capacity and questionable reliability for off-grid stretches.

None of these were dealbreakers, but they were a solid reminder that even legendary rigs need a little love before they’re truly ready for adventure.

Waking Up on the Baja Coast

There’s something uniquely unforgettable about opening your eyes to a Baja sunrise, the salty air drifting through barely-opened windows. You blink a few times. The world is awash with that early-morning palette—blues and lavenders bleeding into the white sand. The only alarm clock? The distant, rhythmic hush of waves brushing against the shore.

Birdsong blends with the faint slap of water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch glimpses of whales surfacing offshore, sending up lazy plumes in the golden dawn. You roll over on your sleeping bag, pull back a window flap, and there it is: an endless stretch of pacific coast, with maybe a stray fisherman casting a line, maybe nothing at all.

Coffee tastes different out here. The briny air somehow makes everything more vibrant. You hear the low rumble of your neighbor’s Toyota warming up—a reminder you’re not alone, but solitude is still easy to find. If there’s a breeze, it carries the sound of life from down the beach: laughter, the clink of a pan on a Coleman stove, maybe a distant dog barking at some unseen pelican.

This is why we came—waking up with sand in the creases of our tent, sea on the breeze, the world unrolled in every direction. And just like that, the day is yours, stretching out as wide and empty as the horizon.

Why a Troopy?

We chose the Troopy for our world traveling unicorn rig because of its legendary reliability, its smaller form factor, its interior space, and its ability to fit into a regular-sized shipping container with no modifications.

We plan on traveling in the Troopy overseas, so it’s incredibly beneficial for us to have. I call it “the F150 of the world.” Whenever you see pictures of folks spending years traveling the world, you see two vehicles that dominate the space: the Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier, affectionately called Troopy. Parts are everywhere because these vehicles are everywhere. NGOs have expansive fleets of these trucks. Countless countries use Troopies as ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles. Because of all these factors, it gives us great confidence that we can travel the world.

But beyond sheer practicality, there’s also a bit of dream-chasing involved. Early on, we looked at all sorts of rigs—vans, pickups, even some left-field options—but the global reputation of the Toyota platform and the classic, no-nonsense charm of the Troopy kept pulling us in. Inspiration came from seeing others build their own adventure machines: folks like Andrew St. Pierre White piecing together overland Troopies in far-off places, adding pop-top roofs and clever interiors. That blend of rugged functionality and well-thought-out design became our gold standard.

Traveling as a Family of Four

One of the coolest things about the Troopy is how well it adapts to life on the road with a family of four. Despite its relatively compact footprint, the interior is cavernous—enough space for the kids to sprawl out with coloring books or settle in for card games while you wait out a rainstorm. The upright, squared-off design means there’s plenty of headroom, and with the right storage solutions and a bit of thoughtful packing (think Front Runner roof racks or Alu-Cab gear), you can stash everything for a long-haul trip without feeling claustrophobic.

The factory dual fuel tanks let you cover long distances between fuel stops—a blessing if your crew isn’t a fan of detours down lonely desert roads hunting for a station. Ventilation is excellent, and good insulation (hello, Havelock wool) keeps everyone cozy on chilly nights or cool on balmy Baja days. Whether you’re navigating city streets or threading your way through mountain passes, the Troopy’s balance of size and capability means you’re not forced to choose between maneuverability and comfort.

If you’re aiming for real memories as a family—waking up roadside, watching dawn break across different continents—few vehicles bring together so much practicality with just the right amount of adventure.

After taking delivery of our Troopy, we drove it to Victoria, Texas, to Karissa’s family’s car audio business, HiPro Audio. There, her brother Justin regularly makes custom audio boxes for their clients, so, as Jeremy Clarkson would most likely say, “How hard can a few cabinets in a truck be?”

Starting Customization

As it turns out, it was pretty hard. It took us three solid months to completely strip the truck. We laid down sound deadening and Havelock wool insulation, built the floor, and planned out the final layout.

Stripping Down to the Bones

We didn’t waste any time getting acquainted with every bolt and seam. Markus dove in headfirst, carefully removing every accessory—bull bars, racks, and any leftover frills from its Aussie touring days. Then it was on to the nitty-gritty: out came the panels, each window, all the doors, and even the old high top. By the end of it, the Troopy sat stripped down to its bare bones, looking more like a blank canvas than a ready-made adventure rig.

With everything peeled away, we could finally get a good look at what was hiding beneath. Thankfully, aside from a couple of pesky rust spots in the left-hand footwell, the frame and body were in amazing shape for their age—no horror stories lurking in the metalwork. That clean bill of health made all the painstaking teardown worth it, and left us with a solid foundation for whatever came next.

We then flew in our good friend Ernesto Lopez of @overlandtheamericas to help us install the piece de resistance of the whole build: the Expedition Centre Mulgo Pop-Top. This piece, like the Troopy itself, was from Australia, and would transform our mostly stock ugly duckling of a Troopy into the full-fledged swan we have today: an overlanding, world traveling production vehicle. With the pop-top, we can fully stand up inside, do inside things and, when it’s bedtime, we can bring down the bed and sleep “upstairs.” Coming from rooftop tent living to having a fully livable interior space was a game changer.

Fabricating the Rear Bumper and Swing-Away System

With the pop-top complete, it was time to tackle another big project: giving our Troopy a rugged, functional rear bumper with a proper swing-away carrier. Markus and his brother dove into the digital trenches, firing up a CAD design program to sketch out something strong, useful, and not completely budget-busting.

After plenty of back-and-forth measurements (plus a few head scratches and minor sibling debates), they landed on a design featuring a single arm to support the spare tire on one side, with a robust platform and mid-sized aluminum box on the other. This allowed us to haul gear, tools, and recovery equipment—without losing quick access to the back doors.

Once satisfied, they cut and welded everything together, then finished it all off with a sleek satin black powder coat. Not only did it look right at home against the newly painted Troopy, but it also meant hours of hard work had finally paid off, all in pursuit of the world’s most overqualified tailgate.

Tackling the Pop-Top: Why Alu-Cab, and How It Nearly Broke Us

When it came time to choose a pop-top, we weighed every option from Australian classics to, ultimately, the South African Alu-Cab. Why Alu-Cab? Its reputation was hard to ignore—robust anodized aluminum construction, weather-sealed hatches, and a design that’s been torture-tested on everything from the Kalahari to the Karoo. We needed something tough enough to shrug off a whiteout in Wyoming but cozy for a rainy season in Patagonia, and the Alu-Cab promised exactly that.

But—nothing is ever simple, is it?

With the truck freshly painted and hope in our hearts, we soon learned the “universal fit” label is more of a suggestion. From the get-go, installing the pop-top was an exercise in humble pie. Karissa’s brother (resident engineer and family MVP) dove into the project, only for us all to discover that the top just didn’t want to sit right. No amount of cajoling got it to hug the gutters as intended.

What followed: a montage of trial, error, and more than a few “Hold this while I weld” moments. We had to add custom metal bracing, reinforcement plates, and further panels—our pristine paint job becoming collateral damage. There were days we felt like we’d bitten off way more than we could chew.

But after all the cutting, tweaking, and cautious lowering with a half-dozen hands and one very nervous dog watching from a safe distance, the pop-top finally settled in. It clicked into place, transforming our Troopy forever. For the first time, we could stand up inside, stretch, and imagine life on the road—rain or shine, continent to continent.

Finally, with that last bolt tightened, we exhaled a collective sigh of relief. The Alu-Cab wasn’t an easy win, but it was worth every scraped knuckle and sleepless night.

Shakedown Trip: The Crucial Test Drive

After months of building, wiring, and daydreaming your way through spreadsheets and sawdust, it’s tempting to declare your Troopy “done” and hit the open road, visions of Patagonia or the Pan-American already dancing in your head. But before you point the hood toward the horizon, there’s one rite of passage you really don’t want to skip: the shakedown trip.

Think of it like breaking in a new pair of boots before a long trek. Hitting the road for a few days—or even just a long weekend—lets you test every nook, bolt, drawer, and system under real-world conditions outside of your driveway. No matter how meticulous your build, some quirks or glitches only reveal themselves when you’re camped in a stiff wind or rattling down a washboard road. The fridge might slide, a latch could rattle incessantly, or you’ll discover your ingenious water system goes on strike the minute you need coffee.

During our own maiden voyage, we realized the value of:

  • Cooking in less-than-ideal weather—because tacos wait for no rainstorm
  • Testing the limits of leaf springs on actual dirt, not just city streets
  • Finding out exactly how many hours Karissa could tolerate the sound of loose coins rolling under the passenger seat

A shakedown trip lets you dial in little improvements, catch any oversights, and figure out your personal routine, all while still close enough to phone a friend (or an auto parts store) if necessary. It’s not glamorous, but it’s essential. By the time you set out for the real adventures, you’ll know your rig inside out—and have confidence that you’re truly road-ready.

Interior Upgrades

Inside our Troopy, we were going for a Scandinavian deisgn inspired by our time in Norway. We used birch ply for the floor, cabinets and benches, protecting the floor from the elements using vinyl. We found old restaurant tables at the local Habitat for Humanity store which we repurposed as our countertop. Then, we painted everything white to create a visually bigger space. A Dometic drop-in cooktop finishes out the inside, as well as a sink. After being quite happy with the size of the Dometic CFX3 55IM (IM stands for Ice Maker) that we had in our Montero, we got another for the Troopy.

We also carry a Kovea slim twin burner stove that fits onto our GP Factor universal drop-down table for days when the weather is bad. We have a strict no-meat policy for stove cooking as we don’t want the interior of the truck to smell like meat for days, and we prefer to cook outside anyways.

Making Space Work: The Gullwing Hatch

One of our favorite interior tweaks was swapping out the rear side window for a gullwing hatch. This simple—but game-changing—mod meant we could easily reach pantry supplies or tools from outside, without having to crawl headfirst into the back. To make it work, we built a dedicated nook into the back of our kitchen storage unit. Now everything from coffee pots to socket wrenches sits right at arm’s length—rain, shine, or when your boots are caked with Utah mud.

This slide-out system gives us a twin-sized bed “downstairs,” for those rare camp days when the wind is so hellacious that we can’t leave our pop-top up, or if we wanted to stealth camp somewhere in town. Water On-the-Go: Filtering and Outdoor Showers

When it comes to staying clean and hydrated on the road, we built a bit of simple magic into the Troopy’s gullwing window cavity. Hidden behind this panel is our compact water filtering setup—a crucial feature for adventurous folks like us who can’t always predict where the next reliable tap will be.

Here’s how it works: the system draws water from our onboard tank, sending it through a filter before making its way to either the camp kitchen or the handy outdoor shower hose, which neatly tucks away until you need it. Whether we’re topping up bottles for a long hike, or washing off the day’s dirt after desert explorations, everything runs from this single, clever hub. The outdoor shower especially comes in handy for sandy feet, muddy paws, or downright dusty days.

It’s not a spa, but you’d be surprised how civilized a quick rinse feels when you’ve been driving rough trails or camping off-grid for a week. With this setup, we don’t just travel farther—we do it feeling a whole lot fresher.

Mapping Out the Plumbing

Plotting the plumbing in such a tiny space took a pinch of Tetris skill and a heap of patience. Before running a single hose, we spent several evenings measuring, re-measuring, and conjuring cardboard mockups to visualize how tanks, pumps, and lines could snake through the Troopy without taking over our living quarters. This was a stage of gentle trial, plenty of error, and a raucous amount of tape (“why is there tape on the cat?”—a mystery for another time).

As we finalized the layout using the “move it ‘til it fits” method, we made sure to think about how future repairs or upgrades could be managed without kneecapping ourselves. Once we liked the plan, elbows and flex lines were installed, and every connection double-checked for leaks. From prepping routes behind cabinetry to installing valves and access panels where we could actually reach them (because nothing says “joy” like trying to tighten a hose clamp through a porthole-sized gap), the real trick was thoughtful prep.

Getting all the plumbing dialed before closing up the cabinetry meant no panic surgery halfway through the Mojave. Turns out, careful planning saves a world of headaches and, possibly, your relationship.

Powering Up

Being photographers, having the ability to charge all our gear was paramount. We went with two Battleborn 100ah lithium-ion batteries, which are then charged DC-to-DC via the engine, or via the Rhino Adventure Gear Merlin 240W solar panel coupled with a Redarc BCDC1225D and Victron Energy MPPT 75V 15amp charge controller. All of our 12v electronics then go through the Renogy 2000W inverter. This is a relatively simple electrical setup, but we’re able to stay out pretty much endlessly with it as long as we have food and water.

We then added in two creature comforts that we consider luxuries: a Planar diesel heater and an Elgena 12v electric water heater. Two things we never thought we’d have, and now we love and appreciate them every time we use them.

Good Bones

We kept the engine 100% stock. We didn’t want to touch the legendary reliability of the 1HZ —an engine that produces a whopping 130HP and 210lb-ft of torque. The only things we did to the exterior was add a set of Volk Racing TE37x wheels size 16×8 with offset +0 wrapped with Toyo Tires Open Country ATIII size 285/75 R16, replaced the stock headlights with Truck-Lite 7-inch LED rounds, and replaced the HID spots that came with the truck with Baja Designs amber LP6 driving and spot combo LEDs. We also replaced the old and rusty winch that came with our truck for a Warn Industries VR EVO 12-S. We have since used it once to get someone unstuck at a beach. For extra storage, we installed a set of Frontrunner Outfitters cross bars to mount a Pelican 1745 Air, and a set of Maxtrax recovery boards.

We also had onboard air installed with the ARB Twin Air compressor. Previously, in our Montero, it would take about 15-20 minutes to inflate a 33-inch tire from 15 PSI to 55 PSI. Now? Five to seven minutes a tire.

Spanners, Bearings, and the Not-So-Glamorous Bits

With the Troopy’s interior sorted, it was time to dive headfirst into the less Instagram-worthy—but equally crucial—mechanical nitty-gritty. Like most vintage Land Cruisers, ours needed some targeted TLC to cruise confidently off the beaten path.

We started with the basics: wheel bearings were swapped out to ensure smooth rolling, and the engine got a well-deserved tune-up (spark plugs, filters, the whole nine yards). Driveshafts went off to be overhauled and balanced, eliminating any unknown vibrations before they could ruin our next road trip playlist.

A new set of front seats went in to replace the tired originals—no more marshmallow sag. To round out the upgrades, we overhauled the trusty winch and added fresh spotlights up front, so we could actually see the trail and not just random woodland creatures leaping into our path.

Though the heart of the Troopy—the frame, engine, and driveline—remained untouched, we made sure the gearbox and differentials were refreshed before we ever put the keys in the ignition for the big trip. Honestly, it’s less about adding horsepower and more about not losing any on the autobahn. In the end, everything mechanical was buttoned up tight, setting us up for adventures where peace of mind rides shotgun.

The First Big Shakeout

Taking your new overland build on its maiden voyage is a bit like finally hitting the open trail after months of tinkering, planning, and late-night YouTube rabbit holes. The excitement is real—the fruits of all those weekends spent in the driveway finally get to see some dirt. But with that first adventure comes a new batch of lessons you just can’t anticipate in a garage.

You quickly realize that even the best-laid plans (and the fanciest gear) still need a real-world shakeout. Bolts that seemed tight at home mysteriously work themselves loose on washboard roads. That perfect storage system you built? Oddly, it doesn’t feel so perfect when you need your jacket and it’s buried under three bins of recovery gear. The sleeping setup that looked ultra-comfy in the backyard might not cut it after a full day on dusty trails.

Here are a few things we—and most overlanders—quickly discover after that first big trip:

  • Rattles and Squeaks: No matter how meticulous you are, new noises will make themselves known. It’s almost a rite of passage to hunt down the source of that one persistent rattle.
  • Packing Realities: Your packing system will get a rethink. You learn exactly what you need quick access to, and what you probably didn’t need to bring at all.
  • Workflow Tweaks: Whether it’s making coffee in the morning or setting up camp in the rain, tasks that sounded simple suddenly demand a smoother workflow. You’ll probably rearrange your setup more than once.
  • Creature Comfort Surprises: Little things, like where you stash your headlamp or how fast you can air back up after airing down with the ARB compressor, suddenly matter more than you expected.
  • Maintenance Notes: The first trip always doubles as an inspection. You’ll spot what needs tightening, lubricating, or tweaking, and your next to-do list grows accordingly.

Most importantly, you realize that perfection isn’t the goal. These shakeout trips are about learning your rig, getting comfortable with its quirks, and dialing in the details for the next time. It’s all part of the adventure.

Living the Overland Life

Overlanding is an incredibly personal lifestyle. Karissa and I took the time to go fully custom with our Troopy to accommodate our photography work and pursuit of an outdoor life. With everything we’ve done, we can stay out longer, work on the road more comfortably, not have our travels fully dictated by the seasons, and have a place to just be whenever the weather takes a turn. The Troopy is far from perfect, and it has its compromises, but, for such a small package, it’s very close to having an overlanding unicorn for world traveling. And, well, that’s as perfect as it’s going to get for us.

Where the Troopy Has Taken Them (And Where They’re Dreaming Of Next)

Speaking of small packages with big potential—the Fuchs family’s Troopy is another example of overland ingenuity. Their adventure so far has led them across Europe, winding through the scenic Balkan coastlines and deep into the cultural crossroads of Turkey. It’s easy to imagine that every border crossing and campsite has layered another chapter into their story as a family.

But as any true overlander knows, the road only teases at the possibilities. For the Fuchs, the map isn’t finished. Future routes are up in the air but, if dreams have any say, they’re eyeing the great expanses of Central Asia, the vast wilds of the Americas, and maybe even a full-on trek across Africa. This rolling home-on-wheels isn’t just built for comfort; it’s ready for whatever continent calls their name next.
