Rocks, ruts and elevation changes can disappear into darkness, and factory headlights are not always reliable enough to reveal what dangers lie ahead. Then the group reaches camp, the engines shut down and those expensive auxiliary lights have nothing left to do. Lights are traditionally used only for illumination, but where’s the fun in that? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter for FREE Wolfbox had a different idea. The newly launched NomadPixel 5, which the company calls the world’s first programmable pixel off-road lighting system, pairs high-output driving lights with customizable digital displays. The 17,700-lumen two-light system can illuminate a nighttime trail, while also being able to shine pixel graphics and messages onto outdoor surfaces. Because the display content can be designed and changed from a smartphone, the lights can easily take on different roles for every trip and the display can be changed several times over the course of one night. An Off-Road Light You Can Program Each of NomadPixel 5’s two five-inch lights runs its own display and can be configured independently of the other via the app. One side can carry a graphic, the other a message — split the job however the moment calls for. Building the display itself is simple. Pick a preset graphic, type out a name or a date, or draw something from scratch, pixel by pixel. Whatever the occasion — a partner’s name, an anniversary, a club logo — it’s covered. Once built, the design can sit still, flicker for attention, or scroll across the display at one of three speeds, dialed up or down across four brightness levels (40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) — whether subtle around camp or full strength when it needs to stand out. This ability to easily change the display gives the lights a life beyond the trail. At a meet, they can carry the name of a rig or the group behind it. But back at camp, under the dark sky and glittering stars, the same light displays can welcome friends, celebrate a win, pop the question, mark a special occasion or carry a message meant for just one person. No new hardware, just a few taps in the app for the lights that led the way down the trail to illuminate an unforgettable moment. More Than a Light Show While the pixel displays are a fun and unique feature, these are still off-road driving lights and Wolfbox designed them for serious nighttime trail driving. NomadPixel 5’s two five-inch lights are rated at 8,850 raw lumens each, while the driving beam reaches 1 lux at 275 meters. This gives drivers a clear, long view of dark trails and remote roads, while remaining flexible enough to lower output when full brightness is unnecessary. Around camp or with other drivers, for example, one of the reduced settings may be more appropriate than running the lights at 100%. Amber and clear lens covers are also included, giving drivers another way to adapt the lights to different conditions and preferences. Decorative automotive lighting has been around for years, but NomadPixel 5 is the first to bring versatility to the next level by pairing pixel displays with driving lights. Users no longer have to sacrifice valuable space on their rig for both auxiliary driving lights and decorative lighting, as this lighting system handles both with ease. This combination could especially appeal to overlanders, who are already hauling enough gear for an extended trip off-grid. A single system that can handle trail lighting, personalization and visible communication is easier to justify than several unrelated accessories competing for space. Another Way to Be Seen Off-Grid In remote areas, cell reception is often unreliable, vehicles are hard to locate in the dark, and group members can easily lose sight of one another. In such situations, it can become dangerous if a driver gets stuck or their vehicle breaks down. This is where programmable displays are also very practical. NomadPixel 5 can display a message such as “HELP” or “SOS,” shining it on a nearby boulder or cliff-face, dramatically increasing the chances of attracting assistance when needed. Of course, the lights don’t replace actual emergency equipment such as a radio, satellite communicator or emergency beacon. They do, however, provide another way to signal others using hardware that is already installed on the vehicle. And the same function could handle routine group messages at a trailhead, campsite or meet when the situation is less urgent. Ready for Mud, Water and Temperature Variations Electronics mounted on the outside of a trail rig are routinely subjected to harsh conditions. Exposure to mud, dust, standing water, vibration, temperature swings and repeated cleaning are all part of the job description of an external off-road auto accessory. NomadPixel 5 has an IP69K rating and uses waterproof breather valves to help protect the lights in demanding conditions. It is rated to operate in temperatures from −40°F to 149°F (−40°C to 65°C), covering everything from deep winter temperatures to hot desert travel. Its physical construction is equally rugged. The housings are formed from ADC12 powder-coated die-cast aluminum, and the display surfaces are protected by UV-coated polycarbonate panels. The lights attach to the vehicle using U-shaped stainless steel mounting brackets. Wolfbox has subjected the design to 136 hours of salt-spray testing, a useful measure for equipment that may encounter moisture, winter roads or coastal air. The LEDs have an estimated operating life of approximately 50,000 hours, and the complete NomadPixel 5 system is backed by a five-year warranty. Lighting Up More Than the Trail NomadPixel 5 is chasing a specific balance: hardware serious enough for the trail, flexible enough to have a personality once the engine’s off. Whether that means marking camp for the night, calling out to a scattered group on a dark trail, or just lighting the way home, it’s built to adapt to whatever the moment calls for. NomadPixel 5 is designed for broad use across most off-road SUVs and pickup trucks, as well as vehicles used to tow trailers or RVs. As with any auxiliary lights, however, installation depends on the vehicle and chosen mounting location. For drivers who want their lights to do more than just light the way, the Wolfbox NomadPixel 5 is available now on the Wolfbox website. Regularly priced at $639, the NomadPixel 5 is currently on sale for $599. For a limited time, readers can also use the promo code NOMADP100 to secure an extra $100 discount — bringing the price down to just $499.
