Egoé Nestbox: Modern Meets Function

Czech-Republican Egoé offers North America premium floating camp systems

Many probably have not heard of a company called Egoé. We hadn’t either until we spied them at one of the Overland Expo shows. Their nifty Nestbox camping setup stopped us dead in our tracks. We had to learn more about Egoé and their Nestbox camping system.

Who is Egoé and what are these colorful Nestbox camp boxes all about? After speaking with Veronika Satinska, Egoé’s Canadian sales manager at the show, we learned Nestboxes come in four different models: Hiker, Camper, Roamer, and the Nestbox Supertramp (the most off-road sturdy of the bunch).

The Egoé Nestbox Supertramp features a portable three-in-one two-burner stove unit. Use it in the Nestbox, remove the stove module for tabletop use, or use each burner alone for backpacking endeavors.

Simple Installation, No Drilling Required

An Egoé Nestbox camping system is simply secured with load-rated straps. No drilling or permanent installations required. The unit can also be removed when not needed, giving users the opportunity to haul cargo or people whenever wanted.

The Egoé Nestbox Supertramp camp units fit a wide variety of vehicles like Jeep Wrangler two- and four-doors, Lexus GX460s, Toyota Land Cruisers, various Land Rovers—and now, a Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear van.

After taking several measurements and confirming them with Petr Kovarík, the company’s U.S. Sales Manager, my husband Andy and I drove to Denver, Colorado, to fit up our right-hand-drive 4×4 with an Egoé Nestbox Supertramp. After a brief demonstration of the setup, we were done with the installation in an impressively short amount of time. That’s something we’re not used to with a vehicle as unique and sometimes challenging as ours.

The tolerances on this Egoé Nestbox Supertramp are tight and exacting. We haven’t heard one rattle when off-roading with it.

We removed the middle and rear seats in our Delica van to maximize our cargo-carrying ability after the Egoé Nestbox Supertramp was installed.

The particular Egoé camping system we installed was the Nestbox Supertramp Complete set, which includes the Kitchen set and Sleeping set. It incorporates a portable two-burner stove unit and sink/washing basin area with a four-gallon water container, two sliding drawers, and various storage nooks. An optional 12-volt Engel MD17F fridge/freezer also nestles in the Nestbox system. The folding bed platform, mattress, and side bolsters sit atop it when stowed for driving duties and assemble on top of folded rear seats before use.

Every inch of the Egoé Nestbox Supertramp has thoughtful design features. Round edges lessen wear issues. Heavy-duty tabs pull beveled birch plywood reveals. A hidden Czech-made paring knife resides in the center of the folding cutting board. Color is introduced in unexpected ways. The Egoé Nestbox Supertramp is a modern work of art that is highly functional.

Having a camp table next to the Egoé Nestbox Supertramp would allow for extra cooking and washing space.

Setting up the Nestbox Supertramp takes a bit of practice until you get the hang of it. But, it’s sturdy and allows us plenty of open space below it for overnight storage.

Nestbox Details

Every Egoé Nestbox utilizes high-quality materials, including our Supertramp. Most other Nestbox frames are birch plywood, however, the off-road-ready Supertramp model includes aluminum sides, a feature the company says makes it lighter and steadier on tougher trails.

“We use the same solution when modifying already existing built-ins, such as the newly redesigned Roamer, which is our largest and oldest unit,” Mr. Kovarík said. “This year, we’ll be remodeling the Nestbox Hiker, which will undergo the same modification.”

In addition to high-quality birch plywood, Egoé uses high-pressure laminate, stainless steel, heavy-duty nylon, dense foam, and premium fabric to construct the Supertramp setup. The only issue is keeping the flat matte black laminate clear of greasy blotches. Basic black shows everything. We’d like to see a black laminate option with a bit of a pattern or texture to conceal this.

Who is Egoé?

Egoé is a Czech-Republican manufacturer of premium modern outdoor furniture. Their exterior structures support the transportation infrastructure and other establishments. Their specialty is building things out of wood and metal, and it shows. Six years ago, they took 30-plus years of experience and start testing freestanding interior camping systems. The Nestbox was born.

Egoé recently expanded its reach by selling Nestbox camping solutions in North America from the summer of 2021 onwards.

“The most popular Nestbox in North America is the Camper,” Mr. Kovarík stated. “More than 50 percent of all sold Nestboxes in North America are Campers.”

He adds that customers see it as a unique solution for smaller vehicles (like the Subaru Forester or Outback, Honda Passport, Toyota 4Runner, or even a Nissan Pathfinder). “You can turn your SUV you use on daily basis into a camper within a few minutes and you don’t need any modifications in your vehicle.”

The sink and wash station is easy to use and sets up in seconds.

Tip: The Engel fridge/freezer latch is easier to use when the axe isn’t in its holster. When stowed, the top of the handle is close to the latch, making it cumbersome to open.

Growing into the Future

“We see the greatest opportunity for growth in North America in connection with the development of new products that will enable us to fit even more vehicles,” Mr. Kovarík explained. “Our goal is to expand the possibilities to other types of cars, which is connected to the development of new units.”

Their goal is to satisfy the needs of both recreational and increasingly demanding travelers.

“We have a number of new developments in the works,” Mr. Kovarík said. “For example, existing units will undergo technical and visual modifications. The product line will expand with a modular unit which is suitable not only for off-road enthusiasts enabling uses in other cars (vans, MPVs).”

Egoé plans to show this unit in the spring, they’ll be setting the exact date about a month in advance, prior to its stateside arrival.
