Custom Off-Road Excellence: The 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition

Introduction to the 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition Off-Roader

The 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition is one of the most highly anticipated off-road vehicles coming from Ford in years. With its unique features and advanced engineering, it is built to withstand harsh conditions, while delivering a superior driving experience.

We had the pleasure of talking to Jason Flowers, owner of Raging Bull Marketing, about the 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition build he completed before SEMA Show 2021. Not only does it look good, but it can hold its own on the trail, most recently seen at Bronco Safari 2023 in Moab.

“Our Bronco is built to just take out to enjoy whenever. If you want to overland, rock crawl, or take the kids to the barn we built it for outdoor enjoyment for all of us.”

Background of Jason Flowers and Raging Bull Marketing

Flowers explains how it all started: “We got into modifying vehicles in the early 2000s as the import tuner scene was taking off. We have built best-of-show-winning imports, which lead us to display our vehicles at SEMA Show, Essen Motor Show, Tokyo Auto Salon, and Dubai. We had branched out and created vehicles for specific companies and manufacturers.”

He and his team were looking to branch out from the import scene and decided off-road vehicles were a great market to get into. “Our first project into off-roading was a Ford Raptor that we put through its paces as a desert ranger-style in the dunes of Pismo. We put to use the finer details we learned with our previous vehicles into our Bronco.”

The Vision Behind the Bronco Build

Speaking of the Bronco, once Jason’s team started working on it, they decided on a plan to make it one of the best builds they’ve ever done. “We built the Bronco to be a nimbler off-roader than the Raptor,” says Jason. “Full-size trucks have their advantages, but the Bronco was the more precise option that we wanted to explore and build on.”

Timeless Design Cues Meet Modern Proportions

When it comes to styling, the 2021 Bronco First Edition is a direct nod to its iconic ancestors from the mid-1960s. You can see that instant connection in the squared-off body panels, upright windshield, and round headlights—all carefully crafted to echo the rugged, boxy silhouette that made the early Bronco a legend for adventure seekers. The prominent grille, complete with bold lettering and distinctive horizontal bars, also channels classic Bronco DNA, while touches like flared fenders and a floating roof add a contemporary edge that ensures the truck looks right at home on any trail.

Choosing between two-door and four-door configurations does impact how these classic lines resolve. The two-door model stays truest to the original playbook, with tight proportions, short overhangs, and a wheelbase that screams agility—a look and feel reminiscent of those early Broncos you’d see climbing over Utah slickrock. Step up to the four-door, and the increased wheelbase and extra cabin length offer more practicality, but they subtly shift the Bronco’s visual balance. While both versions retain the rugged spirit, the four-door lends itself to those who want a bit more room for family or gear without drifting too far from the classic pose.

But no matter which you choose, once you throw on an aggressive tire package—like Jason’s build equipped with beefy all-terrains—the Bronco’s bold stance comes alive and channels the wild heart of its predecessors, turning heads on pavement and trails alike.

Exterior Upgrades and Accessories

The Bronco boasts an intricate and unique wrap collaboration with SS Customs featuring a nature tattoo livery with secret riddles hidden in the design.

The door jams have been covered for tube doors, while the upper cage is covered in textured black LineX material. For maximum clearance for off-roading obstacles, the fender deletes were installed.

The Rockslide Engineering Power Rock Rockers with Rock Guard provide added protection, while the Bay Area Metal Fab rear tire delete/new third brake light/accessory mounts, Rotopax storage units, and DMOS shovel mount enhance the SUV’s functionality.

The JBL 18-speaker sound system with six amplifiers and a digital processor

The Bay Area Metal Fab front bumper integrates four KC HiLites Flex Era 4s, two Flex Era 3s, and two Flex Era 1s. A Warn VR Evo 12-S winch with Factor 55 Fairlead and Shackle mount recovery gear is included for ultimate durability.

The rig is equipped with Bay Area Metal Fab roof bar brackets with KC HiLites Gravity Pro6 Light Bar and Bad Ass Mounts swivel ditch light mounts with KC HiLites Flex Era 4s.

Body Styles and Removable Features

The 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition comes available in both two-door and four-door configurations—each catering to a different style of adventure. The two-door option is paired with a sturdy hard top, perfect for sealing out the elements during rugged overland treks. For those who opt for four doors, you’ll find a soft top as standard, though you can swap in a hard top if that’s more your speed.

Keeping versatility and the spirit of open-air driving alive, the Bronco’s design lets you remove the top—hard or soft—along with the doors, fender flares, and even the fenders themselves. Whether you want an open cabin for soaking in desert air or a stripped-down setup for crawling over boulders, the Bronco is built to transform with your needs. This level of customizability means you can tailor your ride to every scenario, from family outings to rock-strewn trails.

Suspension and Engine

The suspension of this vehicle is designed for optimal off-road performance.

The custom King Shocks 2.5 Remote Reservoir suspension system is equipped with different spring rates and valving by King for added weight.

This allows for a smoother ride over rough terrain and increased stability when carrying heavy loads. The Camburg Racing upper control arms and rear trailing arms also contribute to better handling and suspension flexibility.

The addition of the Broncobuster tie rod braces, steering bushings, and Stage 3 billet aluminum housing with a 3-inch body lift further enhances the vehicle’s off-road capabilities.

The suspension system is designed to handle rough terrain and provide the driver with a smooth ride over bumps and obstacles.

The vehicle is also equipped with a Dana Spicer Floating Rear Axle with a 5.38 rear gear, and in front, a Dana Spicer F-front differential with a 5.38 gear and Spicer Extreme 32 Spline.

These provide improved traction and control on challenging terrain, ensuring that the vehicle can handle even the toughest of off-road conditions.

Under the hood, the Bronco First Edition is equipped with a 2.7 L V6 engine with a Roush cold air intake, high flow intercooler, Optima battery, and a WARN Control Pack Relocation.

The vehicle features a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Off-Road Technology and Driving Aids

While brute strength is essential, thoughtful technology is what truly makes the Bronco such a pleasure to command when the trail gets challenging. The vehicle is packed with off-road features designed to keep things simple and controlled, whether you’re crawling over boulders or weaving through switchbacks.

At the heart of these innovations is a user-friendly drive mode system. With the twist of a dial, you can tailor the four-wheel-drive response to match the terrain—mud, sand, rocks, snow, and more. This system also manages the electronically locking front and rear differentials and, for those tougher trails, allows for quick engagement of a front sway bar disconnect for maximum wheel articulation.

Another highlight is the trail turn assist feature, which helps the Bronco navigate tight corners in confined areas. By selectively braking the inside rear wheel, the system dramatically reduces the turning radius—handy for hairpin bends or threading between trees. Throttle mapping and steering effort are automatically optimized for each selected mode. The result is a Bronco that’s as nimble on the rocks as it is surefooted in mud, easily adapting to a variety of off-road challenges.

Performance in Instrumented Testing

When it comes to real-world numbers, this Bronco is no slouch. Acceleration is brisk for an SUV of this size: it surges from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, with a quarter-mile pass clicking by in 15.0 seconds at 91 mph. It pushes on to an electronically limited top speed of 106 mph—not shabby, considering its off-road intent.

In rolling acceleration, the Bronco moves from 5–60 mph in 7.4 seconds, showcasing strong mid-range response. Kickdowns in top gear reveal some muscle: 30–50 mph happens in 3.4 seconds, and 50–70 mph pulls are dispatched in 4.4 seconds, making highway passes and merging feel confident.

Braking is solid for an off-roader, with the Bronco coming to a full stop from 70 mph in 197 feet. When it comes to cornering, the Bronco holds its own thanks to its suspension upgrades, achieving 0.71 g on the 300-foot skidpad. These results speak to the careful balance between rugged trail capability and respectable on-road manners.

Wheels and Tires for the 2021 Ford Bronco

The wheels are equally impressive.

The five KMC Forged Mesa 17×9 wheels (with zero offset) are intended to be beaten up on rocks, which is why they did not match the color of the beadlock rings.

The ARP wheel studs, Gorilla Forged Closed End Zinc Lug Nuts, and Power Tank Monster Valves ensure that the wheels stay securely in place, even during extreme off-road use.

The Toyo Tires 40×13.5 Open Country MT Rs are used when the Bronco is towed for off-road use only and are swapped out for 37×13.5 Open Country MT for daily driving.

The tires provide excellent traction in a variety of off-road conditions, making them ideal for this SUV to explore rough terrain. They are designed to provide optimal grip and control, whether driving over rocks, through mud, or across sand.

Interior Features

The interior is not only stylish but also practical for off-road adventures. Katzkin provided a unique blue and black interior with an American flag pattern that adds a touch of patriotism to the cabin.

The seats are comfortable and durable, making them perfect for extended journeys on rough terrain. The blue stitching on the leather seats complements the blue exterior accents, creating a cohesive look.

One of the standout features of the interior is the Acumen 4K split-screen rearview mirror cam/recorder. This advanced technology provides a 360-degree view of the surroundings and allows the driver to see obstacles from every angle.

The recorder is especially useful for capturing those moments of off-road excitement and can be used as evidence in case of any incidents.

The Rugged Radios GMRS handheld sits in the quick-release mount on the dash rail ready for spotters and necessary off-road communication.

Meanwhile, the Rugged Radio GMR45 is installed to the accessory mount on the center stack and ensures that communication stays open between the driver, spotters, and others in the group.

The JBL 18-speaker sound system with six amplifiers and a digital processor is a welcome addition to the interior. The matching blue speaker lighting adds a touch of ambiance to the cabin.

The Noco emergency power supply and Power Tank tire repair kit ensure that the driver is always prepared for any situation.

Conclusion

Flowers had a chance to give it a shakedown after his hard work was first shown off to others in the industry. “We were in such a rush to build the Bronco for SEMA Show 2021, we did not get a chance to test it out and enjoy it out on the trail prior to the show.

After SEMA, we took it to King of the Hammers and put it through its paces with a celebrity ride-along. Everything we did to the Bronco was just right. Happy with the choices that we made and how it all came together.”

“The Bronco boasts an intricate and unique wrap collaboration with SS Customs featuring a nature tattoo livery with secret riddles hidden in the design.”

Overall, Jason and his team at Raging Bull Marketing are proud of one of their early forays into the off-road world: “Our 2021 Ford Bronco first edition is built to just take out to enjoy whenever. If you want to overland, rock crawl, or take the kids to the barn we built it for outdoor enjoyment for all of us.

We have vast options in Northern California to be able to take the Bronco in the dunes, rocky desert, or forest which our Bronco can get to and catch your eye while making the journey.”

Expert Impressions: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Industry Impact

After racking up off-road miles and gathering feedback from enthusiasts and industry experts alike, some common themes have emerged about what sets this Bronco apart—and where there’s room for improvement.

Where the Bronco Shines
Reviewers have repeatedly praised its harmonious blend of classic style and modern trail prowess. The vehicle exudes a rugged confidence, turning heads with an extroverted stance that’s equally at home on the dunes of Pismo as it is crawling rocks out at the Rubicon. Notably, the steering stands out among off-roaders—precisely tuned, communicative, and more refined than expected from a body-on-frame SUV riding on knobby tires. This isn’t just good by off-roader standards; it’s impressively sharp when compared to crossovers and even everyday pickups. For drivers seeking a capable adventure platform with on-road manners, it checks a lot of boxes.

Points to Consider
However, this isn’t the perfect all-rounder. Several experts note the cabin remains noisy at highway speeds—sound insulation takes a backseat to durability, so long road trips can be fatiguing unless you’re blasting your favorite playlist. Fuel economy is another sticking point, with the combination of off-road hardware and robust power resulting in more frequent stops at the pump, especially when compared to crossover SUVs. Some have also commented that the interior materials, while durable and ready for rugged use, don’t quite align with the price tag—high-touch points like the steering wheel could use an upgrade to nicer materials for a more premium feel.

Making Waves in the Market
In a landscape long dominated by familiar names like Jeep, the Bronco is shaking things up. Its return brings genuine competition, challenging entrenched favorites with a package that’s just as ready to climb mountains as it is to transport the family to the weekend fair. With a design that channels nostalgia and trail-tested engineering, the Bronco has inspired both loyalists and newcomers to rethink what an off-road adventure vehicle can be.

How does the 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition stack up against its closest competitor for interior space?

When it comes to dimension and real-world usability, the 2021 Bronco First Edition firmly asserts its presence. Compared to its main rival, the Bronco stands out as notably wider, offering a roomier cabin that both driver and passengers can appreciate—especially when it comes to extra knee and elbow space up front.

While both two- and four-door versions deliver strong performance, it’s worth noting how the available space is distributed inside. The four-door Bronco isn’t just about fitting extra passengers: the majority of its added length translates into a considerably larger cargo area, not just incremental room for backseat riders. In fact, while the four-door model boasts over 50% more cargo capacity than the two-door, rear seat legroom only increases by a hair—about half an inch—making both trims surprisingly accommodating for taller individuals. Even passengers well over six feet tall will find the rear seating of the two-door more than adequate for comfort, rivaling that of the competition.

This thoughtful approach to interior layout ensures there’s no need to compromise—whether you prioritize gear-hauling capability or a comfortable ride for every passenger, the Bronco First Edition delivers practical space in all the right places.

When it comes to real-world performance, the 2021 Bronco First Edition stands out in its class, especially against traditional off-road competitors. Its steering is notably more precise—thanks to an advanced independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering—which delivers a more controlled and confidence-inspiring feel even on aggressive, off-road tires. Where other vehicles might feel unpredictable or require constant corrections, the Bronco stays composed whether you’re navigating city streets or winding mountain passes.

Braking performance is solid for an SUV of its size and capability. The off-road-tuned Bilstein shocks do introduce some front-end dive under hard braking—characteristic of vehicles with this level of suspension travel—but overall, the Bronco manages abrupt stops with better poise and less drama than its nearest rivals.

In terms of handling, body roll is well-managed despite the elevated ride height, and the Bronco achieves competitive grip on the skidpad, edging out other trail-focused SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The latest chassis platform also results in a more refined ride, muting much of the shake and vibration often expected from tough, body-on-frame trucks.

As for acceleration, the Bronco’s turbocharged 2.7L EcoBoost V6 ensures brisk acceleration. Even with the heavier Sasquatch package, it outpaces many traditionally powered competitors, sprinting to 60 mph in just over six seconds—ahead of most V6 and four-cylinder variants in the same off-road segment. While you won’t get the high-rev soundtrack of some rivals, the Bronco makes up for it with smooth, usable power that’s ideal for both tackling trails and merging onto highways.

Simply put, the Bronco First Edition blends rugged capability with on-road composure like few others, setting a new benchmark among off-road SUVs for daily drivability and adventurous pursuits alike.

Fuel Economy and Real-World Performance

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the 2021 Bronco First Edition delivers figures typical for an adventurous off-roader. With the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine paired with larger 35-inch tires, EPA ratings come in at 17 MPG in both city and highway driving—an uncommon parity for gasoline vehicles.

In real-world testing, the Bronco has managed to slightly outperform estimates, averaging around 18 MPG on highway journeys. This translates to an approximate highway range of 300 miles per tank, which may be less than some competitors, but remains respectable given the Bronco’s off-road focus and formidable power.

Compared to other off-road SUVs, like the Jeep Wrangler lineup, the Bronco’s efficiency holds its own, surpassing certain models while falling just short of others in highway range and overall MPG. Still, for those who seek a balance between rugged capability and reasonable fuel economy, the Bronco First Edition stands as a solid choice in its class.
