A 2006 Land Cruiser with the Comforts of Home

For most people, a 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser is already more vehicle than they will ever need. For Fritz Jünker, it was only the starting point. His 100 Series, named Steve, was not built to chase the hardest obstacle or collect attention in a parking lot. It was built to carry two people, two cats, weeks of gear, and the routines of home into places where cell service disappears and canyon walls replace neighbors.

The idea began long before Steve entered the picture. In 2013, Fritz spent a year riding solo through South America on a Triumph Tiger 800XC. The trip came during a difficult point in his life and changed his relationship with travel. He documented the journey on ADVRider, but the lasting result was simple: he wanted to keep exploring.

Soon after returning, Fritz met his wife. They began camping and traveling from his 2004 Land Cruiser, but motorcycle travel had already taught him what he wanted to change. Two wheels could reach remote places, but the experience was not always safe or comfortable. In 2020, he bought a 2006 Land Cruiser equipped with Toyota’s Active Height Control system and began planning a platform that could carry the comforts of home without giving up trail access.

That approach reflected Fritz’s career in design-build condominium remodels. Fritz had spent years thinking about how people move through small spaces, where belongings should live, and how storage, power, and lighting shape a room. Steve became a rolling version of that process. The build took more than a year and required research and fabrication when commercial products did not fit his goals. He continued refining those systems on the road, keeping a spreadsheet of changes, and ordering parts from camp when needed.

The Land Cruiser remains close to stock where it matters. The factory 4.7L V8 was left alone, and the original bumpers stayed in place. The stealth approach continued throughout the exterior design. The trim was blacked out, aging seals and plastic pieces were replaced, the windows were tinted, and the truck received 20-inch Black Rhino Mozambique wheels with Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. Lighting upgrades include Morimoto projector components, LED fog lights, and exterior and interior bulb conversions.

The foundation of the build is the AHC suspension. Fritz chose this version because he knew the rear would carry substantial weight. Loaded for travel, Steve can approach 8,000 pounds. Instead of removing the hydraulic system, Fritz rebuilt it with factory components, replaced wear items, and tuned it for the load. Standard Land Cruiser rear coils were added to reduce pressure while preserving the system’s leveling function.

That decision is central to how Steve is used. During the week, it remains a street vehicle. When loaded for a trip, the suspension compensates for the weight and keeps the truck at its intended operating angle. High Mode provides clearance when the trail tightens, while Low Range and Toyota’s drivetrain handle the rest. Fritz is not interested in building a rock crawler. He wants to reach quiet camps, travel through washes and goat trails, and arrive with the truck and its contents intact.

Fuel range became one of the most challenging aspects of the project. The 2006 and 2007 100 Series models use an evaporative emissions layout that prevents a straightforward auxiliary tank installation. Fritz wanted a 24-gallon Long Range America tank mounted where the factory spare tire had been, but making it work required seven install and removal cycles, help from Land Cruiser specialists, and repeated revisions.

The final arrangement isolates the auxiliary tank from the factory system. Dash-controlled electronic ball valves manage the fuel path, and a pump transfers fuel into the original tank while the vehicle is moving. Fritz also created a dual filler setup, added a marine-style vent system, and installed a fuel level display. It solved a problem few products addressed for those model years.

Inside, the design shifts from vehicle modification to camp living. Fritz built a third-row drawer system, tailgate storage, attic storage, quarter-panel storage, and bins that serve as separate closets. A 150Ah Dakota Lithium battery supplies the house system, supported by solar input, a Kisae 2,000-watt inverter, shore power, and outlets around the cargo area. The refrigerator stays powered while driving, and dedicated switches manage each system.

Lighting was treated as part of the living space rather than an accessory. Separate zones cover the interior, awning, tent, tailgate, and underbody. The system can be adjusted through Bluetooth controls and switched from the rear of the truck. A Samsung 32-inch television can be deployed at camp, while the audio system uses Focal speakers, an amplifier upgrade, and a Grom Audio interface.

Sleeping space comes from an iKamper Skycamp 2.0 tent. Fritz also designed the Clima-tube tent heating and cooling delivery system, a patent-pending setup created after he could not find a product that met his needs. Remote start and climate control help the couple stay comfortable in more conditions.

Recovery equipment remains hidden when possible. A Trail Tailor mount carries a ComeUp 12.5rs winch behind the factory bumper, with a flip-up license plate providing access. An ARB dual compressor sits under the hood, recovery boards mount beneath the tent, and Dissent Off-Road aluminum skid plates protect the underside.

Across their Land Cruiser travels, Fritz and his wife have logged more than 100,000 miles of dirt roads, washes, and narrow tracks. They use Benchmark atlases and topo maps to find canyons, high desert, and camps without crowds. Their preferred terrain runs through Utah, Arizona, California, and Colorado, with Death Valley and the Colorado Plateau holding much of their attention.

That approach also shapes how they talk about travel. Fritz has watched social media direct more traffic toward places that cannot absorb it. Trash, trail damage, and location sharing have changed areas that once required effort to find. He believes discovery is part of the experience and keeps their top camps private, sharing locations only with people who show the same respect for the land.

The truck also carries the story of their family. Their cat, Kitty, traveled nearly 100,000 miles with them before passing away in 2023. Two sister kittens, M and V, now continue the routine, joining Fritz and his wife on the road and appearing on their Camping Cats Vibes channel.

For the family, Steve is more than transportation or a project that reached completion. It is their route into open country, their camp, their workspace, and the place where daily life becomes quiet enough to notice what is around them.
